Video Statement

Hello, my name is Riya Mittal. Ten years ago, I was compelled to discontinue high school in favor of pursuing non-academic routes. Today, I am a graduate student at Georgetown University, working towards a degree in Communication, Culture, and Technology, while concurrently developing my own software, Dyslex-Aid.

In 2019, I was formally diagnosed with dyslexia. Upon reviewing my notes, my professor recognized the need for formal testing. This revelation not only provided answers but also sparked numerous questions. Identifying myself as a visual learner, I discovered how diverse aids significantly improved my information processing abilities. This realization inspired the conceptualization of Dyslex-Aid, a software designed not only to facilitate dyslexia diagnosis but also to offer an array of reading and visual aids.

Choosing the CCT program was a deliberate decision due to its interdisciplinary nature. To materialize Dyslex-Aid, I have proactively enrolled in relevant courses, such as Diagrams and Visual Thinking, which allowed me to explore non-traditional learning methods through artist books and diagrams. In the Technologies of Persistence class, I acquired skills in developing user-centric technology aimed at aiding people. Additionally, in my 5005 class, I learned various research methods that enhanced my data collection abilities and deepened my understanding of learning disabilities.

To bring my vision to fruition, I collaborated with Hoya Developers on campus for software development, and the Venture Lab at Georgetown has proven to be a valuable resource. Looking ahead, I am eager to enroll in technology and entrepreneurship classes in the upcoming spring semester to propel the software development process at full throttle.

My journey with dyslexia has not only fueled my personal and academic growth but has also ignited a passion for championing equal access to education. I firmly believe that no student should face the unfortunate circumstance of being undiagnosed and devoid of the necessary aids, potentially leading to dropping out of school. My own experience has highlighted the transformative impact of tailored support, and it is my fervent aspiration to contribute to a future where every student, irrespective of learning differences, receives accurate diagnosis and appropriate assistance. By advocating for inclusivity and leveraging technology through initiatives like Dyslex-Aid, I am committed to bridging the gap and ensuring that education remains a universally accessible and enriching experience for all.
